? What is the iPhone 13 release date?
The iPhone 13s have arrived in stores Friday, September 24, 2021. Unfortunately, some of the deliveries are late, and it's not going to get better anytime soon. Due to the recent increase in Covid-19 cases in Southeast Asia, several Apple suppliers have closed their factories. To make up for the lack, the firm puts pressure on its other partners, hoping to reduce delays. To overcome the shortage, Apple would also have requisitioned components dedicated to the iPad.
Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be enough. Apple would have lowered its production ambitions. In this complicated context, the firm expects stockouts during December. The stockouts would last until February 2022.
Nevertheless, things seem to be improving. Apple has also managed to sell 40 million iPhone 13 during the holidays, a record for the brand. At the same time, delivery times for the most popular models continue to be reduced.
? What is the price of the iPhone 13?
Apple hasn't changed the price list much, since the iPhone 13s start at the same prices as the iPhone 12s:
- iPhone 13 Mini : from 809 euros
- Iphone 13 : from 909 euros
- iPhone 13 Pro : from 1159 euros
- iPhone 13 Pro Max: from 1259 euros
However, Apple introduced a new version with 1TB of storage on its Pro line, which caused the price of the most expensive variant to skyrocket. In fact, we have to count 1 euros to afford the iPhone 839 Pro Max.

?What design for the iPhone 13?
Apple has reduced the size of the notch by 22% on the iPhone 13. The notch, even less imposing, is therefore still in the game. Apple needs room to house its TrueDepth sensors, essential for Face ID facial recognition technology (which would work this time with a mask), even after having managed to miniaturize them somewhat. Apple had to combine the infrared camera and the dot projector into a single module. Despite this small notch, the iPhone 13 still does not display the battery percentage.
On the other hand, the photo block is also more prominent. To protect it, Apple puts a layer of sapphire crystal on the lenses to make them more resistant. On the standard iPhone 13, Apple now arranges the sensors diagonally, as can be seen in the image below. This is also the case on the iPhone 13 mini.
The aesthetics of the iPhone 13 resemble the design of the iPhone 12 with a metal frame and flat edges. It is nevertheless a little thicker, in particular because of the photo modules. They are 7,65 millimeters thick, compared to 7,4 mm for the iPhone 12.
They are also heavier. The iPhone 13 Pro Max weighs 238 grams, compared to 228 grams for the iPhone 12 Pro Max. For its part, the iPhone 13 weighs 203 g, against 189 g for its predecessor. The standard iPhone 13 weighs 173 g, compared to 164 g for the iPhone 12. Finally, the 13 mini displays 140 on the scale, up from the 12 mini (135 g).
iPhone 13 comes in five colors: Pink, Blue, Midnight, Starlight, and (PRODUCT) Red. For the iPhone 13 Pro, Apple has developed 4 colors: Alpine Blue, Silver, Gold and Graphite.
? What is the screen size of the iPhone 13?
Apple uses the same screen diagonals as those of the iPhone 12:
- iPhone 13 Mini : 5,4 inches
- Iphone 13 : 6,1 inches
- iPhone 13 Pro : 6,1 inches
- iPhone 13 Pro Max: 6,7 inches
On the other hand, there is something new on the refresh rate. Apple had abandoned the idea of offering 120 Hz panels on the iPhone 12, fearing to ruin the battery life, which can already be undermined by 5G. But this time, it's the good one: the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max have a 120 Hz screen, with ProMotion.
The standard and mini models are not affected and remain at 60 Hz. However, the Super Retina XDR screen of the iPhone 13 is 28% brighter than the previous generation and can reach a peak brightness of 1200 nits in HDR.
The 120 Hz ProMotion screen adapts the screen's refresh rate according to the user's needs (games, reading, etc.). “Refresh rates are tied to what's happening on the screen. If your game drops to 30 fps, ProMotion does the same. If you watch a video shot at 24 fps, it streams at 24 fps,” Apple explains on its site.
Note that you can now have your screen repaired by any professional, certified or not. To prevent users from going through another repairer, Apple initially installed a chip that must necessarily be paired when changing screens, otherwise Face ID will be permanently deactivated. As expected, the measure did not particularly please users, who lobbied for the Cupertino company to backtrack. This will be done with iOS 15.2, which includes the desired fix.
⚡️ What performance?
The SoC Bionic A15 is manufactured using a 5nm+ etching process. According to Apple, its A15 chip uses 6 cores, 2 high-performance cores and 4 low-power cores. Apple announces that its chip is 50% more efficient than its competitors, and the benchmarks confirm the brand's promises.
On the GPU side, it has 4 cores on the iPhone 13 and 13 mini, and 5 cores on the Pro models. Apple promises 30% and 50% higher performance respectively. The 16 Neural Engine cores are also said to be capable of performing 15,8 trillion operations per second. Ultimately, the graphics performance is 55% higher than on the iPhone 12 Pro.
The iPhone 13 are 5G compatible thanks to the presence of a Snapdragon X60 modem from Qualcomm. This modem is capable of simultaneously combining millimetric 5G (mmWave) and 5G below 6 GHz to provide both high throughput and good coverage to users. Millimetric 5G is however reserved for the United States.
The iPhone 13 benefit from the new WiFi 6E standard, the main interest of which is to add a third frequency band to this technology, the 6 GHz joining the 2,4 and 5 GHz to declutter the latter. This standard promises a more stable connection, faster throughput (up to 11 Gb/s) and reduced latency. Again, not all countries are at the same level. In the US WiFi 6E is useful, as 6 GHz is available.
? How much RAM and internal storage?
The iPhone 13 Mini and 13 are offered with 128 GB, 256 GB and 512 GB of internal memory. The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max are entitled to 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB. The amount of RAM is similar to that of the iPhone 12.
? What autonomy and what recharging?
Apple promises significant improvements in battery life, including an additional 1 hours on the iPhone 30 mini compared to the previous generation, and an additional 13 hours on the iPhone 2 thanks to a 30% larger battery. On the Pro models, Apple also promises a gain of 13 hour and a half compared to the iPhone 25 Pro, and 1h12 for the iPhone 2 Pro Max. The iPhone 30 are distinguished above all by the autonomy in video streaming. The tests confirm the excellent autonomy of the smartphones.
As with the iPhone 12, the iPhone 13 will also be deprived of a charger in the box. Only, the thing could change because of a complaint filed by a coalition made up of many Chinese students. They demand that Apple again provide a mains charger in the packaging. According to them, Apple's new procedure is pushing users to move towards MagSafe magnetic charging.
? Which camera for the iPhone 13?
On the sensor side, Apple is betting on a new 12 MP sensor with a focal length of 26 mm for its iPhone 13 and 13 mini, capable of capturing 47% more light. Alongside it, we find a new 12 MP ultra-wide-angle with a 120-degree field of view, and with a focal length of 13 mm. Unsurprisingly, the Lidar scanner is reserved for the more expensive versions of the iPhone 13, in this case the Pro models.
Sensor Shift optical image stabilization, which only the iPhone 12 Pro Max benefited from, is also making an appearance on the lower models in the range. As a reminder, this is a system based on the ultra wide-angle sensor, which acts like a gimbal and capable of moving to follow the action as best it can without tremor.
The ultra wide-angle sensor is also entitled to a complete overhaul, but its aperture remains at f / 2.4. Last novelty for this specific objective, it receives an autofocus functionality, absent so far. These additions prompted Apple to increase the size of the photo block.
But suddenly, how do the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max stand out in photos if the iPhone 13 and 13 Mini catch up with them on all points? These two references are entitled to XXL photo sensors, with an opening of f / 1,5 more interesting for the management of light. They show better capabilities in photos during poor light conditions. The iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max offer a new wide-angle sensor this year that offers huge 1,9 micron individual pixels, perfect for night shots. This year, all cameras are compatible with “Night Mode”, which allows better performance in low light. Apple promises 2,2x higher performance compared to the iPhone 12 Pro, and 1,5x higher compared to the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
The iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max also get a new ultra-wide-angle sensor with an f/1.8 aperture, which promises to capture 92% more light than the previous generation. It also brings Autofocus, a first on iPhone for this sensor. This also allows you to capture macro shots at a distance of only 2 centimeters from the subject. Moreover, some doctors use it to treat the eyes of their patients.
The smartphones also use a new 77mm telephoto lens allowing users to get closer to their subjects while recording video and to shoot even more classic framing portraits, offering 3x optical zoom for a full 6x optical zoom range on the camera system.
Finally, iPhones remain undisputed video champions, their real strong point compared to high-end Android mobiles. Apple announces that it is for example possible to change the bokeh after a video has been captured, a first on a smartphone. To make it easier to record videos, Apple has launched Intelligent Cinematic Mode which switches between front focus and background based on what's happening in the frame of the image. It “anticipates how an important new subject will enter the frame and brings it into focus at the right time”,
In addition, smartphones offer for the first time Portrait mode on videos, previously reserved for photos. This functionality is accompanied by the presence of a new format, ProRes, which allows you to record movies in very high definition. This format is added by the iOS 15.1 update on Pro editions. On the other hand, this format will be reserved for iPhone 13 Pro with a minimum of 256 GB of internal storage. To activate this format, simply follow the manipulation below:
- Go to the Settings app
- Go to the Camera section
- Click Formats
- Check Apple ProRes

? What's new for iOS 15?
The iOS 15 update marks the arrival of a function called “SharePlay” on FaceTime, an option soberly called “Focus” which allows you to mute certain notifications and a new Weather application. It is installed on all iPhone 13s when they leave the factory. However, it suffers from a few minor bugs. Serious security flaws have also been identified.
? How will the iPhone 13 connect?
The iPhone 13 is obviously compatible with 5G (sub-6 GHz) and backward compatible with 2G, 3G and 4G. It is also compatible with these standards: Gigabit LTE with 4×4 MIMO and LAA, Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi‑Fi 6 (802.11ax) with 2×2 MIMO.
