Streamer Ninja broke a Twitch audience record during a Fortnite session with Drake, as Spaniard El Rubius blew counters on YouTube in the company of other Spanish-speaking streamers by exceeding the mark of one million simultaneous spectators.
Fortnite Battle Royale: how to get started?
The popularity can be explained by several factors. It is notably available on iOS, PC, PS4 and Xbox One while Fortnite arrived on Android in the summer of 2018 with new features as a bonus. It therefore potentially affects a large sample of gamers. Another important parameter: it is free, unlike its main competitor, PUBG, which is only accessible without paying in its smartphone version.
Its cartoon aspect also allows it to stand out and attract a different type of audience. But don't be moved by this very colorful and cute aspect that Fortnite can give off: it is not really easy to learn, especially for players who are not used to shooters or the Battle Royale genre. This is why we are giving you some tips to get you started.

Choose your interface and handling
The choice of interface and handling is not trivial. You have several choices which will influence the way you play. First of all you have to choose whether your gun will fire automatically when you are facing an enemy or if you need to tap the screen (and where on the screen). Automatic fire works well for certain types of weapon (notably firearms) and much less for others (bladed weapons, blunt weapons or throwing weapons such as grenades). Rest assured: whatever your choice at the start, you can change it a posteriori.
You also need to choose your interface. There are three preconfigured interfaces. The first is “Old School“. It is the simplest, with fewer touch controls displayed. The second is the “Combat Pro“. It highlights the controls dedicated to clashes with other players. But this is done at the expense of construction tools. It is perfect for those who prefer to loot opponents rather than harvest resources. The last interface is called “Builder Pro“. It is the most complex and the most difficult to master. She skillfully combines the tools of combat and construction. And it offers the most shortcuts. Note that each preconfigured interface can be modified according to your tastes and your style of play.
Choose the best weapons
Players have a inventory with only 5 locations. It is therefore not possible to collect all the weapons you find and it is necessary to make a choice. To keep the game balanced, there is no such thing as a really overpowering weapon that outshines all the others, but there are still a few basic rules to learn to do well at the start.
Know that to be good at Fortnite, a good distance management is paramount. That's why you have to be versatile and be able to answer all kinds of questions. For this, you need weapons that are effective from far and near. Of course, you also have to know how to adapt. Sometimes you will run out of ammo or be unable to find the weapon you want. Some are rarer than others. You can also estimate the level of rarity of an object by the color of its text. WoW players will not be lost, this is exactly the same color code:
- White: Common
- Green: Unusual
- Blue: Rare
- Purple: Epic
- Orange: Legendary
Game after game, you will be able to choose your weapons according to your tastes and your strengths. But in the meantime, we offer you a combination of weapons that will be very often interesting:
- A sniper will be very effective at long distance. With such a weapon, you will be able to make carnage in the high positions. The observation and location of enemy positions being essential, the telescope can also allow you to take information.
- On the contrary, shotgun is a melee weapon. No need to shoot with it if your target is even a little far away. It is very useful in buildings or in the city, where it is not uncommon to see players and find themselves within close range of each other.
- Le assault rifle offers a good compromise in terms of distance, allowing you to duck from relatively far as well as up close. However, it requires to be fairly precise: each bullet (except in the head) inflicts limited damage compared to other weapons, so avoid firing too many stray bullets.
- Pomegranates allow you to unlock a situation when a player or a team is camping on a position. An effective way to bypass constructions and elements of the scenery to reach its target or force it to move, making it de facto vulnerable and putting the opposing player under pressure.
Feel free to abuse shield potions, which allow you to benefit from additional protection in addition to the 100 base health points. They can be ingested as soon as they are collected, but make sure before you are safe: you will be vulnerable for a short time. But you still have to use them quickly: armor is very important to survive and it frees up space in your inventory.
Where to land: in town or elsewhere?
In Fortnite Battle Royale, you don't appear at a random point on the map. You start the game in a flying bus, from which you must then jump. You can then control your fall and choose where to land on the battlefield. The location selected is not to be taken lightly and constitutes a real strategic choice.
For beginners it is better avoid cities. This is where you can most easily find weapons and equipment, but it's also where you have to deal with the presence of many players. Better to refrain from landing directly in those areas where you end up directly in the sights of opponents and opt for a quieter location instead.
By dint of discovering the map (there is only one so far), you will be able to estimate which spot best suits your style of play and find a balance between danger and the presence of resources. Note that the card changes over the months. For example, a huge crater appeared in season 4. You can find below the map as it is at the start of season 5, which notably saw a desert area appear to the south-east.
Among the areas that seem suitable for a landing for a beginner (without too many people but with the possibility of recovering weapons or with an interesting topography), we find:

The Fortnite Chest Map
Chests contain weapons and items and are highly sought after by players. These are more likely to give you items with a higher rarity than an item found in the wild. To be well equipped, you absolutely have to find several chests in a game, hence the usefulness of the map below. Of course, the higher the concentration of chests, the more likely you are to run into opponents, so be careful. It is possible to spot them by the sound they emit.
Construction in Fortnite
Fortnite offers an interesting gameplay element in its Battle Royale, which brings more depth to the game and which is not found in PUBG: construction. Many players prefer to do without, finding the system too complicated. It is true that it takes practice to master it and use it effectively. But once we understand how exploit it to one's advantage, this is an important asset that makes the difference.
Each player is equipped with a pickaxe at the start of the game. It is used to destroy the environment (walls, ceilings, trees, stairs ...), which allows you to surprise an enemy who thought he was safe and to collect resources that allow you to build:
- Le wood is the most common resource but also the most fragile. With a few shots, your opponents can demolish your buildings. It can be recovered by destroying trees or building elements.
- La Pierre is stronger than wood and can be obtained by using its pickax on rocks outdoors or on certain items in buildings such as chimneys.
- Le metal is extremely strong but suffers from several shortcomings. Small items do not provide enough resources so you have to look to vehicles to acquire them, but they are quite rare. In addition, building with metal requires more time: no question of starting to build if you are already under enemy fire.
The construction allows the player to protect from enemy fire, block a passage, gain height or reach strategic places. It takes time and requires experience to know when and how a build can tip a situation in its favor, but it's definitely worth a try.
Manage the area on Fortnite
This is the very principle of Battle Royale: as the game progresses, the card is reduced in order to force the players to meet and oblige them to be mobile to a minimum. The playing area gets smaller and smaller and players outside it must take damage from the storm, which quickly kills them.
When a zone narrowing is announced, the players who are outside the new limits must then go to the new reduced playing field. It is not a question of running there like a madman but of finding a balance to reach it in time according to the distance which separates you from it while avoiding the danger. You have to anticipate the movements of other players who will also seek to join the area.
If you are already in the new zone, you can take the opportunity to find a position (in height and under cover if possible) and to welcome the players who will be flocking to you. In theory, you will then have a clear advantage over them, while they will be forced to advance against to the pressure of the storm. Otherwise, if you must go to the area, be careful and remember that your opponents will be waiting for you.

And yes, you have to pay attention to everything around you but also your health and armor bars. Engaging in combat with more HP necessarily gives you a big advantage. Here are the items that allow you to regain vitality:
Apples : heals 5 HP up to 100

Other basic Fortnite tips
We've covered the most important aspects of Fortnite, but there are still plenty of other subtleties that you need to take into account to play at a decent level and aim for the Top 1s. Make good use of all sound information that you can harvest in order to locate your enemies. The sound of their footsteps, gunfire or construction in progress are valuable clues that allow you to decide on a flight or an attack. Don't forget of course that your opponents can do the same: be careful of the noises you make.
We have already mentioned it, but a reminder cannot hurt: in general, the higher up you are, the more you gain an advantage over your enemies. Many means are available to enjoy a clear view: roofs, hills or buildings. To caricature: position yourself on a construction on the roof of a building on a hill, and you are the boss of the area.
Unless you are protected by a construction or the environment, never stay static. In Fortnite, it is better to stay constantly on the move so as not to become too easy a target for the opponent, especially if the latter is equipped with a sniper: a single headshot, and it is automatic death. When moving, avoid straight lines, you must be unpredictable. Do not hesitate to jump either, it will only complicate the task of your enemies.
Another suggestion: do not rush on the loots without thinking. Your opponents can take advantage of the moment you search a corpse to ignite you. It is important to ensure that the surroundings are secure before embarking on such a maneuver. If you know that another player is nearby, a strategy may be to hide near a corpse or a crate and wait for an enemy to come and collect weapons and items to take them down.
