How to change the background of WhatsApp chats
You are interested in understanding how to change whatsapp wallpaper when you chat with your contacts from yours smartphone (using the app for Android o iPhone) or from computer (using the client for Windows, MacOS or the relative Web version) but you don't know how to do it? Then follow the instructions on what to do that you find right below. It's a breeze, you have absolutely nothing to worry about.
I already anticipate that, depending on what your preferences are, acting from mobile you can set one of the predefined backgrounds, a photo from the device gallery or one of the available solid colors. From a computer, however, at the time of writing this tutorial only solid colors are available. Also, keep in mind that if you use the same WhatsApp account on multiple devices, the changes you make will only take effect locally.
Android
If you use WhatsApp on Android, in order to change the background of your chat sessions the first fundamental step you need to take is to take your mobile phone, unlock it, access the screen home and drawer (the screen where the icons of all the apps are grouped) and start the instant messaging application by pressing the relative icon.
Once the main WhatsApp screen is displayed, press the button with i three dots vertically collocato in alto a destra, selects the voice Settings give the menu check if you know what Chat on the next screen.
So it is on the voice Background and choose, from the additional menu that is shown to you, whether to select a new background for your chats from the gallery of your mobile (Gallery), whether to set a default background with solid colors (Solid colors) or a wallpaper from the WhatsApp library (Wallpaper library). Keep in mind that in the specific case in which you have chosen to take the wallpapers from the WhatsApp library, you will first have to download the image package from the Play Store, agreeing to the thing through the notice appeared on the screen.
Then, depending on what you previously selected, set the photo, image or color to apply by selecting the relevant one preview e fai tap sul pulsating Tax, present in the lower right part of the new screen displayed, to confirm the choice made. If, on the other hand, you wish to cancel the operation, press the button Cancel which is always at the bottom of the screen, on the left.
Should you have second thoughts and want to reset the default background image, you can do it at any time by pressing the button with the three dots vertically on the WhatsApp screen, by selecting the item Settings from the menu that opens, reaching the section again Chat> Wallpaper and choosing the option default. If, on the other hand, you want to remove the background in use without applying any, choose the option No background.
If you want to customize the background of the single chat, instead, tap on the conversation with a user and tap on the icon ⋮ up. At this point, select the items Wallpaper> Change and choose a background from the options you see on the screen and which I told you about in the previous lines.
iPhone
If, on the other hand, you have an "iPhone by" and are therefore interested in finding out how to change iPhone WhatsApp wallpaper, the first thing you need to do is to take the device, open it, access the home screen and press onicon instant messaging application.
Once the main WhatsApp screen is displayed, presses on the item Settings located at the bottom right, select the wording Chat attached to the additional screen that is shown to you and presses on the item Chat background which is located at the top.
At this point, depending on your preferences and needs, choose whether to select a wallpaper from the WhatsApp library (Wallpaper library), if you set a solid color as wallpaper (Solid colors) or whether to set a photo from the iOS roll as wallpaper (Gallery).
Then, according to what you have chosen previously, select the image, photo or color you want to use by tapping on the relative preview and confirm the choice made by pressing the button Tax located at the bottom right. If, on the other hand, you want to cancel the operation, tap the button Cancel always placed at the bottom, on the left.
Have you thought about it and want to restore the default background for your chats on WhatsApp? It can be done, of course. To do this, proceed as follows: go to the section Settings> Chat> Chat Background application, select the item Reset background on the screen displayed and confirm the choice made by pressing the item again Reset background in the menu that opens. Et voila!
If, on the other hand, you want to proceed with customizing the background of a specific chat with a user, you must first open the conversation in question. Once this is done, press on user's name at the top and select the items Wallpaper and sound> Choose a new wallpaper, to set a wallpaper from the options listed on the screen.
computer
You use WhatsApp from computer, via the client for Windows, the application for MacOS or by Web WhatsApp, the online version of the service? In this case, to change the WhatsApp background by acting on the chats you must first start the application on your computer, calling it from the Start menu (on Windows), from Launchpad (on macOS) or via the browser (in the case of WhatsApp Web).
Next, if you haven't already done so, scan the QR code to connect to your account. If you don't know how to do it, open up WhatsApp on your smartphone, go to the section Settings> WhatsApp Web / Desktop> Scan QR Code and scan the code with the mobile phone camera that you see in the WhatsApp window on the PC.
At this point, click on the button [...] (on Windows), on the one with the down arrow (on macOS) or on the one with i three dots vertically (on WhatsApp Web) located at the top left of the application screen and choose, from the menu that opens, the item Settings.
In the further menu that appears, select the wording Chat background, then move the mouse cursor over one of the solid colors visible on the left to preview the final result (right) and click on it to apply the changes.
If you change your mind, you can reset WhatsApp's default wallpaper at any time. To do this, click on the button [...] (on Windows), on the one with the down arrow (on macOS) or on the one with i three dots vertically (on WhatsApp Web) located at the top left of the WhatsApp screen, presses on the item Settings from the menu that opens, on that Chat background e seleziona l'opzione By default in the solid color list that is shown to you.
How to change the background of the WhatsApp keyboard
In addition to changing the background of the chats you would like to understand how to do it change the wallpaper of the WhatsApp keyboard when do you have conversation with your contacts? Then follow the instructions on what to do that you find below. The thing is feasible both from Android that iPhone, resorting to the use of alternative virtual keyboards.
Android
If you use a smartphone Android, to change the background of WhatsApp by going to act on the keyboard you must, as anticipated, install one of the many alternative keyboards that allow, in fact, to change the background used.
So first, choose the third-party keyboard you want to use that supports changing the background. On the Play Store if you find them galore, just type in keywords like "keyboard" o "Keyboard" in the relevant search field. However, not all of them are equally valid and, above all, not all of them allow you to change the background to make conversations on WhatsApp more cheerful and colorful. So, if you want some advice, try the ones I have selected for you and that I have listed below.
- SwiftKey Keyboard - it is one of the most popular free keyboards on the square. It is developed by Microsoft and allows you to type texts without ever taking your hands off the screen through a system that intelligently recognizes words. It offers a high degree of customization, allowing you to choose from many themes and colors and to set images as you like as wallpaper.
- chroma - fast and light keyboard that integrates a special function thanks to which its color adapts to that of the application in use. It's free, but to unlock some extra features, such as advanced layout and color editing, you need to upgrade to the paid version (costs € 4,99).
- Fleksy - “intelligent” keyboard that allows you to type texts without having to remove your finger from the display. It is mostly based on the use of gestures and, while presenting a very minimal look, it allows you to choose between multiple different themes with which to customize backgrounds and colors. It's free, but offers in-app purchases (starting at 84 cents) to unlock extra themes and features.
To install the one you prefer, just access the relevant section of the Play Store through the links I have provided you a little while ago and press the button Install and on that Accept (if necessary) visible on screen.
Afterwards, you have to worry about enabling and setting the use of the keyboard by acting from the Android settings. So, click on the icon of Settings (Quella with l 'gear) present in drawer (the screen where all applications are grouped), select the item Language and input from the screen that opens, presses on the wording Current keyboard e seleziona l'opzione Choose keyboards.
Then put the check mark next to the name of the keyboard to be activated (eg. SwiftKey Keyboard), tap the button OK in response to the security warning that appears and goes back to the menu Language Input. Finally, press again on the voice Current keyboard and put the check mark next to the name of the keyboard you want to use as default.
At this point, open the app related to the keyboard you just enabled and choose the background you want to use while typing texts on WhatsApp (and not only). Each keyboard offers its own menus and customization settings. In most cases, however, just select the section Wallpapers or that one Temi and choose the background or theme of interest. For example, if you are using SwiftKey Keyboard, you have to press the button Temi, select the theme you like best and tap on the item Download.
Later, you can use the keyboard of your choice on WhatsApp by starting the famous instant messaging app on your Android smartphone, selecting the reference conversation and… starting to write! If you want, you can switch from one keyboard to another while typing your texts, by pressing the button with the keyboard located at the bottom right and select the name of the keyboard you want to use from the menu that appears. If you don't see the button with the keyboard, try holding your finger on the icon for a few seconds globe or space bar.

iPhone
Even if you own a iPhone you can change the background of the WhatsApp keyboard and, even in this case, you have to resort to the use of a third-party keyboard that, in fact, allows you to change the background used.
So, first choose the third-party keyboard you want to use that supports changing the background. Up App Store there are tons of them, you can find them by looking for keywords like "keyboard" o "Keyboard" in the relevant search field. However, if you want some advice in this regard, try the ones I have selected for you and that you find listed below.
- SwiftKey keyboard - is the iPhone counterpart of the Android version mentioned in the previous step. It offers for better or worse the same functions as the variant for the mobile platform of the "green robot" and allows you to choose from many beautiful different themes that can be applied to embellish conversations. It's free.
- TouchPal - free keyboard that focuses heavily on customization, with dozens of themes, stickers and the ability to change the writing font. Typing turns out to be fairly fast thanks to the various functions offered.
- Go Keyboard - keyboard chock full of various and constantly updated themes that you can choose from. It also allows you to quickly add stickers while writing and turns out to be fairly fast. It's free, but offers in-app purchases (starting at $ 4,99) to unlock more themes and extra features.
To install the keyboard of your choice, just access the relevant section on App Store through the links I just provided, press the button Ottieni / Installa and authorize the download via Face ID, Touch ID or password (depending on the model of iPhone in use and what is defined in the device settings).
Next, enable the keyboard in the iOS settings. To do this, press the icon of Settings (Quella with l 'gear) present in Home Screen, select the voice Generate them in the new screen that appears, that Keyboard and tap on the wording Keyboards. Afterwards, he presses on his voice Add new keyboard and select the name of the keyboard installed previously (ex. SwiftKey) from the list Third party keyboards. Then presses on the name of the keyboard on the screen Keyboardscarry your ON l'interruttore accanto alla voce Allow full access and press pulsating Allow.
Once this is done, open the app related to the keyboard you just activated and select the wallpaper for the same one you want to use on WhatsApp (and not only). Note that each keyboard offers different menus and customization settings than another. Anyway, usually just go to the section Wallpapers or that one Temi and choose the background or theme of interest. For example, if you are using the keyboard SwiftKey, just tap the button Temi, press on the theme you like most and select the theme you prefer among the many available.
Once this is done, you can finally start using your keyboard with a modified background on WhatsApp. So, open the famous instant messaging app on your iPhone, open the conversation you are interested in and start writing. To switch from one keyboard to another while chatting, press and hold for a few moments on the button with the globe at the bottom left of the keyboard in use and select the name of the one you are interested in from the list that opens.
