Clothes dryers are becoming more and more popular in homes. With a flourishing market, the choice is sometimes difficult to make between this or that device. Do not panic, we are here to guide you with our comparison.
According to GIFAM (Interprofessional Group of Household Appliance Manufacturers), in 2019, the major household appliances market showed an increase of +2,9% in volume compared to the previous year. Among the purchase successes is the clothes dryer. With +5,3% (in volume), these appliances are increasingly popular with households, ahead of washing machines (+3.%), in particular.
This increase in tumble dryers is explained by the success of models equipped with heat pumps in the face of resistance products - which consume more energy.
Another explanation, most appliances today are condensing (equipped with a tank) and only require a mains socket to operate.
Finally, they are becoming more and more “intelligent” thanks to sensors embedded in the drum to adapt the drying time - when possible.
Between ease of installation, more efficient appliances and the possibility of drying your laundry at any time, washing machines are gradually making their way into the home as a must.
Bosch, Whirlpool, Siemens, Electrolux... our comparison is there to help you make a choice; follow the leader.

What are the best heat pump dryers?
Let yourself be guided by our experts
-
⚠️ What are the different types of dryers?
Like washing machines, tumble dryers can be either porthole or top-loading. It is also necessary to determine if one wishes a dryer with condensation or evacuation, knowing that the latter are increasingly rare. Evacuated models require the connection of a pipe to the outside of the house, while condensing units, which only need to be placed, are easier to install and use.
-
? Are all dryers noisy?
Just take a look at the energy label and the technical data sheets of the different models to see that the sound levels vary greatly from one model to another (differences of 10 dB(A) can be noted). However, this criterion can be important if the device has to run at night or if it is close to a living room, especially since the cycles are quite long. Obviously, if the dryer is in a laundry room, this criterion is less important.
-
⚡️ Does a clothes dryer use a lot of electricity?
Tumble dryers can have a high energy consumption. It is the energy label that provides this indication. The best tumble dryers display an energy class of A+++, but the most energy-consuming have a class A, B, or even C. The drying system depends on consumption: a device using a heat pump consumes less than a model of machine using a resistance. Energy consumption is an important point to take into account, because at the rate of 4 cycles per week, it takes 40 €, on average, to add to the household's electricity bill per year (for a heat pump machine condensing).
-
? Are dryers easy to use?
You have to choose between a model with a "mechanical" programmer (where the user sets the drying time himself) or an electronic one. The second adjusts the temperature and drying time of the textile you want to dry (using cotton, synthetic, wool programs, etc. and probes that measure the humidity in the drum). The presence of a display can also be practical, as well as a clear and legible identification of the programs. Finally, think about maintenance: some dryers are "self-cleaning" and therefore require minimal handling.
-
? Some tumble dryers are dedicated to wool?
Most machines have programs for all types of fabrics. But only some provide baskets for delicate laundry or even woollens. It is important to check this before buying it so as not to be disappointed with your selection.
-
Do the dryers have a lot of programs?
On some models, there are special programs dedicated to delicate laundry or wool, for example. In addition, like washing machines, some dryers have a program to freshen up (remove odors and restore a little hold to the laundry), an ultra-fast program... We also think of the function delayed start (or delayed end) which can be useful or even the drum lighting option.
-
Can an appliance with a water tank connect to a direct drain?
Some types of clothes dryers can be connected directly to a house drain - like a washing machine. Check on the back of the device whether the hose of the water container can be pulled out. If so, then it is possible to do so. If not, it is necessary to continue to empty this condenser.
-
Is the maintenance of a clothes dryer tedious?
Some dryers are "self-cleaning" and therefore require minimal handling. It is also necessary to remember to remove the films of fluff on the filters (drum filter and/or heat pump filter) in order to maintain the performance of your device.
-
What is a “mechanical” programmer?
A "mechanical" programmer allows the user to adjust the drying time of his laundry himself. Conversely, the electronic programmer alone adjusts the temperature and drying time of the textile to be dried (using cotton, synthetic, wool programs, etc. and probes that measure the humidity in the drum). The presence of a display or screen can also be practical. Moreover, some are tactile to integrate the addition of options to the cycle (delayed start, anti-crease, etc.) in particular.
-
Which capacity to choose?
It is important to distinguish between the volume of the drum and its capacity in kilograms. Indeed, some linens can take up space while remaining completely light or, conversely, be heavy without taking up space. Everyone's fiber habits determine whether they prefer a large tub with a large capacity or a smaller one.
-
What is a condenser dryer?
With these models, drying is done in a closed circuit. The air is sucked in and then resistors heat it. It is then thrown back into the drum to remove moisture from clothing and other linens. Then the air passes through a filter to trap the lint before ending up in a condenser to be cooled. This reservoir is located at the bottom of the dryer.
-
What is a heat pump condenser dryer?
On this type of device, the air is therefore sucked in, heated by a pump and then inserted into the drum. This hot ventilation passes through the laundry and the humidity present is charged in the air to form water vapour. The latter then lands in a cooling tank and is pumped upwards by another pump into the recovery tank. Nowadays, this type of process is the most common on clothes dryers. Moreover, this system makes it possible to consume much less energy than a device equipped with resistors.
