How to Convert MP4 Video to AVI on Windows
Let's start with a couple of converters intended for Windows systems. As I told you these are completely free and easy to use applications: choose the one that seems to you best suited to your needs and use it following the instructions I am about to give you.
Mobile Media Converter
Small, but surprisingly effective. Mobile Media Converter is a video converter capable of processing all major multimedia file formats (AVI, MP4, WMV, FLV, MOV, 3GP etc.) and converting them very quickly. It is available in two versions: a "standard" that must be installed on the PC and a laptop, which I personally recommend and can also be used from USB sticks and external hard drives without tedious installation procedures. To download the portable version of Mobile Media Converter, connect to the program's website and click on the button first Download now and then on the voice portable collocata sotto the dicitura Download for Windows.
Once the download is complete, start the executable Mobile Media Converter xx Portable.exe and drag the MP4 videos you want to convert to AVI into the window that pops up. When done, select the item AVI Video from the drop-down menu Conversion to, presses the button (...) to select the folder to save the output videos and start the conversion by clicking the button Convert.
If you want, by clicking on arrow located at the bottom right, you can set the quality level of the output videos (I advise you to use the option High in order to get the videos at the highest possible quality, but the profile should be fine too Medium) and you can adjust parameters such as the bitrate (by clicking on the button Advanced).
Video to Video Converter
Another video converter that I highly recommend you to try is Video To Video Converter, which is also available in a portable version (so it does not require installation) and supports all major video file formats: AVI, MP4, MKV, MPEG , WMV DVD, 3GP, MP3, FLV, SWF etc.
To download the portable version of Video to Video Converter on your PC, connect to the program's website and click on the button first Download and then on the voice Click here to download ZIP archive found under the heading Download Video to Video Converter - Portable Version.
When the download is complete, open the ZIP archive that contains Video to Video Converter (VTV.zip), extract the contents to any folder and run the executable vv.exe. Now choose thecittàn from the drop-down menu for language selection, click on OK and drag the MP4 videos you want to convert to AVI into the window that pops up.
Then select the icon REVIEWS, click on the button OK to confirm, select the path to save the output videos by clicking on the icon folder which is located at the bottom right and presses on Converted (top left) to start processing files.
If you want, by modifying the settings found in the right sidebar you can adjust parameters such as the quality of the output videos, their resolution, their dimensions, the aspect ratio, the audio and subtitle tracks to keep in the output video and much more. How quality I recommend that you keep the default (same as source, i.e. as the original file) or to choose one of the higher values, while to choose the audio track to keep in the output movie you must select one of the numbers available in the field Audio stream index.
How to Convert MP4 Video to AVI on Mac
Do you use a Mac? No problem. As mentioned at the beginning of the post, there are excellent software to convert MP4 video to AVI even on macOS. A few examples? I'll settle you immediately.
Adapter
Adapter is one of the best free video converters for Mac. It uses the FFMPEG "engine" (well-known open source video processing software) and supports all major multimedia file formats. To download it to your computer, connect to its official website and click on the button Download.
When the download is complete, open the package dmg which contains Adapter, drag its icon to the folder Applications macOS and launch the software. In the event that an error message appears, right-click on the Adapter icon and start the program by selecting the item apri give the menu to compare.
At this point, presses on the button Continue and wait a few seconds for the installation of FFMPEG (the software that Adapter uses as "engine"). Next, drag the MP4 videos you want to convert to AVI into the program window and select the item Video> General> Custom AVI give menu to tendin Video which is located at the bottom.
Now click on thegear to view the Adapter's advanced settings, make sure that in the field Resolution Same as source is selected (in order to maintain the same resolution as the original video) and set an option between High o Very high in the drop-down menu Quality to get good quality output videos.
Finally, select the path to save the videos in AVI format by choosing an option between source (same folder as source file) e Custom (custom path) from the right sidebar and presses the button Convert to start converting videos.
Optionally, by dragging subtitle files, images or audio tracks into the field Layers you can add any of these elements to the output videos, while using the trimming you can trim the output videos by setting their start and end points.
Smart Converter
Another free software you can rely on is Smart Converter which doesn't include a ton of advanced features but does its job and does it well. It supports all major video / audio file formats and is super easy to use.
You can download it directly from the Mac App Store by visiting the link I just provided you by pressing the button Get / Install the app (located on the left) and, if prompted, typing in your Apple ID password. If visiting the link does not automatically open the Mac App Store, click the button View in the Mac App Store and confirm the opening of the program.
On first launch, Smart Converter may ask you for permission to access contacts to get your email address. There's no reason you should let them, so hit the button Do not allow and go quietly forward by pressing on Get Started.
To convert a video with this app, drag it to its main window, then select the item DivX from the menu More (located at the bottom right) and presses the button Convert. Don't be scared if you see the wording Conversion speed: slowest (i.e. slower conversion speed), it simply means that the software will have to convert both the video and audio of your MP4 file to make it an AVI.
The output videos are saved by default in the folder of Movies> Smart Converter of the Mac, unfortunately there is no way to change the path.
